Chittagong : My Second Hometown
Chittagong, a city which is located at the southeastern part of Bangladesh, also positioned between the hills and the Bay of Bengal. Chittagong is also called as “Queen of the East” and is the second biggest metropolis after Dhaka. This city is my second home which is fulfilled with natural beauties and a beautiful culture.
Chittagong holds a rich and eminent history that holds the memories of thousands of years back. The Mauryan and Gupta dynasties, the Mughal and the Brittish are the only a few empires that have come and gone through the city. There are many artifact from these historical period in this city. Such as, Chittagong’s longstanding ties to Islam are exhibited by the 9th century Anderkilla mosque. As I lived almost 5years in Chittagong, I used to go there every Friday for Jummah. The city is an important hub for trade and commerce from the Brittish empire then. By that ancient time the city was one of South Asia’s hub for tea, jute, and other products. The Brittish also founded many institutions in this city. For example, Chittagong college, chittagong Court Building and Khalurghat Bridge etc. As it is my second I have visited most of the places of the city.
Chittagong also has the biggest seaport of Bangladesh which is located on the band of karnaphuli river. The port is the heartbeat of Bangladesh because most of the international exports and imports are happen to here and for this, it is one of the busiest port in South Asia. Beside, the port is also home to the major facility of the Bangladesh Coast Gaurd, garrisons of Bangladesh Army and the largest base of Bangladesh Navy. The largest and most significant river in Chittagong Hill Tracts is Karnaphuli river which is located in southeast of Bangladesh. Reccently the Bangabandhu Tunnel, the first tunnel of Banhladesh which has gone under the Karnaphuli river is very attractive and beautiful.
Chittagong district with it’s diverse beauty, from hills to beaches, lakes to forests shows the natural beauties and wonders that encourage explorers to explore more. The city’s nature not only a feast for the eyes but also a source for inspiration. Among them, Foy’s Lake is another beautiful attraction of nature. There is also Kaptai Lake for boat riding or a trac through hills which will leave many memories in anyone’s heart for a lifetime. Besides, Chandranath Hill Track, Sitakunda Hill Track is a piece of paradise to the trackers.
Chittagong is also famous for it’s traditional dishes which are not only satisfy the taste but also provide the rich cultural history. Whatever your taste in food – spicy curries, aromatic, biriyanis or decadents treats, the city has enough properties to offer everyone including Meujbani beed, kala bhuna, Patishapta, Shutki mach, Chom Chom and so on. But in particular the Mejbani of Chittagong is famous all over the world. And every year many tourists come to visit Chittagong from all over Bangladesh and world to taste these food. Moreover, the locals are very friendly and they are known for their hospitality and we also welcome visitors with open heart.
